Roberts' two favorite landscape motifs are intimate secluded scenes that may focus on a group of trees or a meadow clearing; and expanses of water and their shorelines. The "Delta scenes" are examples of the latter. In them, the composition is reduced to three basic elements of water, land, and sky. Roberts explains," The Delta is very calming, there is this vast expanse--the tonal relationships of the water, land, and sky are constantly changing. The possibilities are endless." The Delta scenes enable Roberts to solely concentrate on color and atmosphere to create pure visual poetry.
