Roberts
created his first watercolors in December of 2006. He approaches them the
same way as his oils. In watercolor, he prefers to work in a small scale,
usually painting on a 10" x 14" watercolor block. It was during
a trip to Holland in the summer of 2005 that first kindled his interest
in watercolor. There, Roberts became aquainted with the 19th century Dutch
Hague school artists. He was surprised that most of those artists worked
in watercolors as much as in oils. Sometimes they would do a watercolor
version and an oil version of the identical composition, often to the watercolor's
advantage. This inspired Roberts to try his hand in watercolor. Since working
in watercolor, Roberts has a new found appreciation of the watercolor work
of Sargent, Zorn, Homer, and the Wyeths. |
